NCFHA: "THE SHORTS" 2012 Fall League August 27
Everyone ready for hockey? !!
Welcome everyone to the Fall season of the NCFHA league. We had much energy and high level play during our summer league season that we are looking forward to carrying over to fall 2012. Thanks to Shirin for organizing a successful summer league. We have had quite a time securing fields for the fall season, but thanks to the efforts of Savannah Devarney and Heidi Faith, we have been able to secure a new field at Pacifica in San Francisco to allow the league to run on those weekend dates that Stanford is not available. Thanks for all your help! We are looking forward to a fun and competitive 2012 season.
Key League Dates
- The first day of league play will be September 9th at Fairmont Field in Pacifica (290 Edgewood Drive, Pacifica). We will have our first round of round robin play that day.
- September 9th will also be the day for our new player evaluations. These evaluations are essential for effective balancing of our teams and competitive fairness. After NPD evaluations, the captains will participate in a player draft. Katie Holcomb, our new player evaluation chair, will post that draft day schedule soon. I want to take time to thank Val Haas and Cyndi Lee for their great work as new player chairs last year and into this year. Val has a new baby and Cyndi will be out of the country starting next month so they will not be able to continue the role. Katie has stepped right in and hit the ground running.
- Youth hockey will likely start September 9 at Pacifica, pending field availability. Kendra Lucking, our Youth Chair will post more information about the youth program now that we have secured field time.
- Our league schedule is near final and will be posted soon. We will send out the latest information as we get it, but please refer to ncfha.org for the updated schedule and field information.
Annual General Meeting
We will have our AGM on September 16th for all players during the youth hockey session. There should be at least one captain represented at the AGM and all players are encouraged to attend.
We will introduce our league officers for the 2012 Season, our league mission and goals, discuss significant rules changes, dues and new programs for the league (See below).

Mission of NCFHA
- To promote and further develop Northern California as a national strength in hockey
- To establish a fun, safe and competitive league for hockey players in Northern California.
- To establish an environment of good sportswomenship and leadership on the field and in the community
Olympic Hockey and New Rules
A many of us had the opportunity to view streamed live Olympic Hockey and a few of us had the opportunity to attend Olympic Hockey games. One thing that is quite evident is that hockey is moving to a much faster paced game as teams continue to incorporate the self start rules and a constant flow of substitutions. There is also a stronger enforcement of fouls with the two minute green card rule. Christine and Lindsey, our umpiring charis will communicate how NCFHA will incorporate the new rules, the self start rules and answer questions at the AGM on the 16th. This session will be important as we head into the new season.
Club Player of the Week
After each week's play, Captains will nominate a club player of the week for either their team or another league player. We will post the leading player and their weekend's contribution on the website for the week and the board will nominate one of these players for the USFHA's Club player of the month. We hope this program will provide more visibility of the NCFHA within the USFHA.
League Dues
League dues for the 2012 season will be $115 per player. These dues include two sets of round robin play for each team, a playoff series where each team gets at least two playoff games, one practice day per week at Stanford (TBD, but likely most Wednesdays 6:30-8) with no turf fee. These Wednesday sessions will offer the opportunity to have a training day, for the more experienced players to teach additional hockey skills, and to continue to improve the level of the league. Students have the opportunity to buy down a portion of their league dues with other contributions to the league (e.g., umpiring or coaching youth hockey). These situations will be handled directly with the captains and the board.
Captains
All teams should plan on electing two captains per team starting this season. There is increasing responsibilities for the captains and an expanding league. Captains will get elected for 2012 and communicated to the board by September 16th. It will be important for the captains to reinforce the new rule changes with their teams, especially as we are transitioning these rules to the league in 2012. New rule changes for green cards, own goal scoring, and short corners will be some of the bigger changes for 2012.
We are always trying to improve the league. To that end, we have developed a short survey which we hope will give you the opportunity to give us some feedback on areas where we can improve the league. Your feedback is anonymous unless you sign your name to it ;) Click here >>
We look forward to seeing everyone again on September 9th to start the season and having a great season of hockey.
Cheers,
Susan Wood.
